Not the Man I Used to Be
The Story
There are things in my life I'm not proud of. Like most people, I have regrets.
There were times when I knew I wasn't anywhere close to being the best version of myself. I knew I was making mistakes. I knew I was letting down people I loved. And knowing it somehow made me hate myself even more for continuing to get things wrong.
Carrying the weight of failure takes a heavy toll. Eventually, my own decisions built a prison out of guilt, regret, and pain — and for a while, I lived there.
It took me a long time to understand something that seems obvious now:
My past could explain me without defining me.
I couldn't change what I had done, but I could decide who I became next. I could still become the kind of man I admired. I could learn from my failures instead of spending the rest of my life being punished by them.
A huge part of that journey was falling in love with my wife and experiencing the incredible feeling of being loved by our family. They gave me something worth becoming better for.
I'm still a work in progress. I'm certainly not the best version of myself yet.
But I know who I want to become. I know who I'm living for. And when I look back at the person I once was, I can finally say something I'm proud of:
I'm not the man I used to be.
This song is a letter to myself — a reminder of how far I've come, how far I still have to go, and to keep going.
Lyrics
I've stood in the rain long enough
To know every storm runs out of sky
Watched dreams come and go like seasons
Learned not every loss is mine
I've carried burdens for far too long
Wore them like a second skin
Now I'm layin' down what no longer serves me
And lettin' the tide roll it out to sea
The road behind me shaped the man I am
But it don't own me anymore
No longer sittin' stuck in the past
Finally seein' what I couldn't see
No bitterness, no goin' back
I'm not the man I used to be
Every scar became a lesson
Every valley had its purpose
Now I'm standin' on higher ground
I'm not the man I used to be
I've learned that pride can build a prison
And only pain is where it leads
The older I get, the less I need
And the more this life gives back to me
Now my family's gathered 'round the table
Talkin' 'bout their hopes and dreams
That sweet feelin' oh that sweet feelin'
Of their love that set me free
The road behind me shaped the man I am
But it don't own me anymore
No longer sittin' stuck in the past
Eyes only on what's in front of me
No bitterness, no goin' back
I'm not the man I used to be
Every scar became a lesson
Every valley had its purpose
Now I'm standin' on higher ground
I'm not the man I used to be
I don't need another chapter
Tryin' to prove somebody wrong
I've spent enough years chasin' shadows
Now I know exactly where I belong
No longer sittin' stuck in the past
Finally seein' what I couldn't see
No bitterness, no lookin' back
I'm not the man I used to be
Every scar became a lesson
Every valley had its purpose
Now I'm standin' on higher ground
I'm not the man I used to be
The road was long, but it brought me here
Right where I'm supposed to be
Standin' on higher ground
I'm not the man I used to be
