I'll Leave the Light On
The Story
This is the most deeply personal song I've ever written — and the first one that ever made me bawl my eyes out while writing it.
Divorce has casualties. Even when you believe you're making a decision you have to make, there's collateral damage you never intended and relationships you never imagined losing.
I lost someone who mattered to me more than I know how to fit into a paragraph.
I'm not going to make my case here. The song says everything I'd want to say, and it says it better than I could. What I'll add is that I don't think there's a version of this story where anybody walks away without scars — me included.
Time has a way of changing what we're able to see. It has for me.
So this isn't an argument. It's a door left open. However long it takes — the light stays on.
Lyrics
I still remember playin' catch in the backyard
Mud on your shoes and my worn out arm
Tryin' to be the father somebody never was
Doing the best with everything I had
You weren't my blood, but that never mattered much
Love don't ask questions when it's showing up
And I'd do it all again if I had the chance
Every late night, every game, every single damn one
But time has a way of changing everything
Be careful throwing stones at a house you've never lived in
Be careful judging roads you've never walked upon
The truth ain't always black and white like people make it seem
Sometimes the hardest choices leave the deepest scars unseen
One day you'll look back different than you do right now
When life humbles you and turns your whole world upside down
And maybe then you'll understand the things you can't today
Until then I'll leave a light on if you ever find your way
I know you love your mama and I hope you always do
Nothing in this world could ever change that truth
But every story's got some pages that you never got to read
And every hurt has reasons buried deep underneath
You were gone when everything came crashing down
Absent people don't know what they don't know, yet somehow
It's easier to pick a side than live inside the gray
Til life puts its own burdens on your shoulders some day
And life has a way of teaching what words never can
Be careful throwing stones at a house you've never lived in
Be careful judging roads you've never walked upon
The truth ain't always black and white like people make it seem
Sometimes the hardest choices leave the deepest scars unseen
One day you'll look back different than you do right now
When life piles its shit on you and turns your whole world upside down
And maybe then you'll understand the things you can't today
Until then I'll leave a light on if you ever find your way
I know what it feels like when somebody leaves
I know why you hold on so tight to what you believe
Maybe somewhere deep inside you're scared I'll disappear too
But son, that's the difference between him and me with you
I've been standing right here through the silence in between
No amount of distance changes what I feel for you
So be careful throwing stones at a house you've never lived in
Be careful judging roads you've never walked upon
Cause one day you'll have your own mistakes your fair share of sleepless nights
Your own impossible decisions, your own fights
And if that day should come and you don't know where to turn
If all those lines you drew begin to fade and blur
You don't have to say anything you don't ever have to explain
Just come home son and I'll be glad you came.
