One Last Mile
The Story
This was one of those rare moments in my songwriting life when the lyrics came faster than I could write them down.
I wrote “One Last Mile” for someone I loved during a time when our relationship was really struggling. Personally, I felt like I was standing in the middle of a raging storm.
I didn't know how to explain what I was feeling without risking another argument, so I did the one thing I knew how to do: I wrote a song.
It was my way of telling her I wasn't giving up. That I was working on myself. That I knew I had things to fix, and I was willing to fight for our relationship. More than anything, I wanted her to know that I could still see the light ahead of us — I just needed her to hang on for one last mile.
In the end, we weren't able to find our way back to each other, and the relationship ended a few years later.
Ironically, it remains one of my favorite songs I've ever written.
Maybe it couldn't save my relationship. But if there's a man somewhere standing in his own storm, struggling to find the words to tell someone he loves that he wants to make things right, I hope this song can say some of those words for him.
