The Light in the Darkness
The Story
This was the second song I ever bawled my eyes out writing.
My oldest daughter had to deal with more than her fair share growing up — bullying, cyberbullying, abandonment by close friends, and eventually her mother and me divorcing before she went off to college. I watched her carry pain I desperately wished I could take away for her.
But I also watched her become incredibly strong.
“The Light In The Darkness” is my love letter to her. It's about everything she overcame and the strength and resilience that eventually carried her out of some very dark places.
More than anything, it's about letting go of what happened yesterday as she steps into adulthood and realizing that the past doesn't get to decide where she goes next.
I can't walk every road for her anymore. But wherever that road takes her, she'll never have to wonder whether her dad is in her corner.
I always will be.
Lyrics
Here you are now
Standing at the crossroads
No going back to yesterday
And don't know which way to go
Is it any wonder
Why your heart keeps looking back
Old ghosts still whisper
Shattered light fades to black
Sooner or later, you've got to leave the past behind
Don't let old scars
Write the story of your life
Don't let old pain
Keep you up another night
So much life to live
So many mountains to climb
Your worst days are behind you
The best are still up ahead
Baby, you'll find your way
Baby, you'll find your way
To the light in the darkness
I've watched you fight
So many battles nobody else could see
I've watched you smile through it all
While the pain flowed underneath
And I'd be lying
If I said I had never prayed
That I could sacrifice myself for you
Shelter you from the price of pain
Now you're stronger than you'll ever know.
Don't bring old scars
To this new chapter of life
Don't let old pain
Steal your dreams tonight
There's still so much to do
So many ways to feel alive
Your worst days are behind you
The best are still up ahead
Baby, you'll find your way
You'll find your way
To the light in the darkness
All those tears you've cried
While you lay awake in bed
With all those voices
screaming inside your head
You can bear the weight of pain
And any words somebody says
You can ride out any storm
And find the break of day
You'll have everything
Don't bring old scars
To this chapter of your life
Don't let old pain
Rob your dreams tonight
So much life to live
So many mountains left to climb.
Your worst days are behind you
The best are still up ahead
Baby, you'll find your way
You'll make your way
To the light in the darkness
Here you are now
Staring at the crossroads
No matter which way you go
you'll never be alone.
I'll be here right beside you.
